Murder and intrigue in a small town - comical
This venue has the chance of giving you more fresh angles because of all the relationship permutations. Of course this would also lend itself to a wider variety of comedy bits. If you are from a small town, you would have lots of character roll models to chose from and if you were not, I'm sure you could get some great fodder simply from family dynamics.

I wrote a 2000 word short story for a writing comp, it was a dramatic murder/mystery/intrigue in a small Australian town. I was pleased with the result.

the dramatic murder and intrigue in a small town--everyone knows everyone else and their business in a small town, so it seems like you could have lots of side stories ('a la "Desperate Housewives") going on at the same time for an interesting, sometimes complicated plot line.

Murder and intrigue in a small town - comical, mainly because the other plots seem unoriginal and overplayed.
