My best friend has a beloved tropical houseplant she has had since the day her 7 year old daughter was born. She forgot it was on the porch and it was subjected to our recent ice/snow storm with freezing rain and temperatures in the low 20's. She has brought it in and removed all the damaged leaves and just the stalks remain. Any suggestions for things she can do to help this plant revive? Or is it a gonner?

I agree with Bigdaddy on the don't give up part. But don't water it unless the soil is dry. Plants need watered because so much water escapes through the leaves. With the leaves being gone very little water will leave the plant so it needs watered very little. If you water it "normally" (like you did when it had leaves) you will end up rotting the roots and then it will be a gonner. Also, if you fertilize use a liquid fertilizer mixed at half strength about once a month. Don't use full strength fert until it has recovered.

I agree with Big daddy. I had plants coming back to life after two years of "coma" so do not give up. Good luck.

Don't give up...water it, nurture it and you never know. If the stalks appear green and somewhat healthy, they will probably sprout again in a more comfortable climate. Good luck.
