Actually, the Adidas ad campaign is referring to the fact that there are 11 players on the field. Or more specifically, there is you and 10 others that make up a team.
It is true that many offensive greats have worn the number 10, but the Adidas +10 ad campaign uses plenty for players who are not associated with the number 10. For instance, Raúl (#7) or Ronaldo (#9). Hence, the Jose +10 (referring to the little boy who played with soccer greats) in the Adidas commercial aired repeatedly during the world cup.
In short, the message is that you as an individual may be a great soccer player, but there are 10 other players that you rely on to achieve greatness.

Because there used to be players like Maradona, and Pele'. Who dawned the number 10. It became such a fad, that most managers would place their star player in that number. a large part of the time, that player would become the greatest player in the clubs history. once they retired, the club would retire the jersy number. the "+" changes the number so that they can wear the number 10. but it is printed as "+10". by doing this, todays all-stars can wear it, and not wear just, 10. Though, im yet to see this at international levels...

Number 10 for a long time is owned by the leading role player in the team, started by Maradona I think. But since few seasons ago number 9 took over it but I guess each players have their own preference on the numbers they want to use. Stevie G and Lampard love their number 8

10 is the "play makers" jersey it is an honor to wear this number no matter what country you are for or what club team you are on. Adidas put out the +10 campain to show who the teams to look up to. many of the players who wear this jersey also wear the captain's armband. so the +10 just signifies their talent.

Mostly what sclos said, but unfortunately the ad campaign is for adidas, not Nike.
