try watching a 'behind the scenes' of a scary movie, they'll show you the actors sipping latte talking about how thier trailer wasn't big enough and how hard it was for all that makeup to come off after a shooting all day !

The Exorcist is a scary movie and I felt uncomfortable watching it alone too. I think the reason why you can't watch the movie alone is because you are reliving the feelings that you had as a child when you first seen the movie. The impact of a small child watching a horror movie is much more devastating and has a longer effect than a grown adult watching the same movie. I think the best way to overcome a fear, is to face it head on! I too didn't want to see the Exorcist (I felt the same about The Shining) alone and when it was in the movies, I bought two other people along. To my surprise, I was actually kicking myself for being scared of the movie because now that I am grown, it seemed a little corny to me. You are letting old feelings overpower you. You should try watching it alone again and you may be surprise how your adult self will handle the situation. Good luck and take care.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who was affected by that movie as a child!
I haven't watched it as an adult yet... though I do believe that when I do, it will be during the day with my husband; I think that would allow me to watch it and dispell the irrational fear that has hung around our necks like an albatross! I think that reading about the making of that movie is going to be helpful, and having watched the parody doesn't hurt either!

Chris S says: try hypnosis (ironically they tried hypnosis on Regan in Exorcist II: The Heretic. Can't remember if it worked or not...lol
Yeah, it's normal for a movie to make a lifelong impression on a person, like that.

I've seen that movie, it's aight. It's a known fact that your brain works like a computer, like throwing old stuff out and putting new stuff in, throw that memory out, and put new thought in. conquer this and you shall succeed.

Why would you want to watch that movie by yourself? And I hardly think that counts as a traumatic experience.
