Assuming traffic isnt bad and you like to go about 80 mph on whatever freeway you chose (i take 680 to 580 to 5 as opposed to 880 to 80) you can make it in 3.5-4 hours. But you should expect some nasty traffic during the weekends around xmas and especially new years. Its taken me up to 6 hours to get there when its snowing.

3 1/2 - 4 hours depending on traffic and weather conditions.

We usually figure 3.5 - 4 hours. If it's really snowy, it may take longer, even if you have a Subaru. You always manage to get stuck behind someone in a 2WD car going 20 mph.

(We have a Subaru, driven by my impatient boyfriend. Which makes it all that much more "fun".)
