I want to find anime that have a smart theme, well meaning that the main character ain't so dumb or so stupid that makes the shows seem like you could have done better yourself. Anime such as Death Note is great! Detective Conan is ok, Detective Academy Q is sorta good. Anyone out there kno other anime ?

Ghost in the shell SAC is an actiony, yet very deep anime. It analyzes the Stand Alone Complex, which is a psychological theory, that is represented with the infamous "Laughing Man" and "Individual Eleven" incidents. I also analyzes the possibility of a prosthetic and cybernetic body and everyone connected into the Net, yet they all stand alone. Major Motoko Kusanagi is the main character and she leads a cybernetic crime fighting elite police force called section 9. The anime is shocking with the ending and is somewhat violent with sexual references, but is still really good. Major pwns everyone!!

What's wrong with Naruto being too mainstream? It's nonetheless a good anime and although Naruto is seriously lacking in the brains department, I have a hunch you'd enjoy watching Shikamaru in action. I know I do.

If you like Death Note, I recommend trying out Monster. It's the story of a brain surgeon who winds up involved with a serial killer. Lots of drama, action, and detective stuff.
And if you read manga, check out 20th Century Boys!
Edit: Hmm... only other series I can think of is Spiral, another youth detective series, although it falls a bit short of Death Note in my opinion.
