It depends on wether or not you are punching the person in self defense or because you want to deliberately hurt them; and even in the second case if you are crazy it wouldn't be a sin.

According to dictionary.com that would depend on what your religious or moral principles are. See below:
Dictionary.com says sin is "any act regarded as such a transgression, esp. a willful or deliberate violation of some religious or moral principle."

yes, its a SIN, but i've done it before. u have got to have a reason tho, here was mine.(not very good reason): i was on my bus on my way home from school, sitting next to my friend. this guy who is normally kinda my friend sits in front of us, turns around, and starts blabbering. he brags about how good he is in algebra, which ticks off my friend.(she hates algebra and he is nerdy and brags) i had a bad day and i was just ignoring him. then he starts annoying me like crazy and starts bouncing towards me, back and forth. i tried to hold it. i thought 'i'm gonna count to three and if he doesn't stop, he will pay!! 1......2.......3!!!!' and WHAM!!! i landed a big one in the middle of his face! he shut up and leaned back, his face red. my friend started laughing like a hyena, "that 'laugh' was funny! 'laugh' good job!" his face stayed red but he didn't cry. i panicked "sorry!!!!" i said over and over. i really was. "its ok." he said, also beginning to laugh. we are friends again and people laugh whenever i tell them this story=P

Not if you are in danger, but to just do it for no reason, I would have to say yes. :)
