1. Because he remembered when he was a kid and his father took him to see some gay man dead from being beaten to death. He figured Jack suffered the same type of fate.

2. "Jack, I swear!" Many take this to mean different things. Some say he swears that if he could go back to do things to do differently he would. Which could be the case since he did decide finally to quit his job and go to his daughters wedding....leading you to believe he has finally learned what is important.

Good questions by the way!

Just to answer the first question...In the novella on which the film is based, it seems Jack's wife believes the story that he died accidentally while changing a tire. Ennis is not sure it was an accident - he fears Jack was killed like the man he'd seen as a boy. Then, when she mentions the other man, there is a line in the story that Ennis has an instant flash of understanding - "it was the tire iron" (I think that's the quote). Meaning, he realizes it was no accident, Jack was killed because other men had figured out he was homosexual.

The film makes it seem more as perhaps that is just Ennis' fear of how Jack died, but the book makes clear that it was murder.

He imagined his friend's death in the way he did because of what he had seen happen to a gay guy when he was younger. This fear haunted him throughout his life that he would be 'found out' and 'beaten to death'.

At the end of the movie, Ennis says 'mrrmrmumblermumblerriccosheeyyyit', and says it with PASSION! lol! ;-)

For the first question:

I thing the wife's story was made up and she knew at the end of Jack's secret life. Plus I think that was what really happen and his death was the effect of his affair with the other husband of his wife's friend. They were found out.

1 --- that is the way he died because his affair with the other man was discovered and his wife and father in law had him killed. She knew how he died you could tell by her reactions during the phone call.

2 -- "Jack, I swear."
