Just like to say - sorry Spazrats - but since 1 hand is four inches it is impossible for you to have had a horse measuring 15.4hh - it would in fact have been 16hh since 15.4 would be 64 inches which is the same as 16hh! Also I was always told that a horse is anything 15hh and over so technically 14.3hh is still a pony (who ever said 14hh and over is a horse... ) this is mainly as breeds such as welsh sec D, Dales etc generally are classed as ponys but do often measure upto 14.3hh (obviously can be bigger if mixed breeding)

Since a 'hand' is 4 inches, when you hear of a 15 hand horse, it is 60 inches (or 5 feet) 15 1/2 hands is 5 feet, 2 inches. (at the top of his withers)
14 hand horse, would be 56 inches,etc..
A pony is considered under 14 hands..

The measurement is taken by the width across the back of your hand, usually 4 to 6 inches. Start at his whithers with one hand, sideways, palm against his coat, tips of fingers pointed towards his head. Then going hand over hand, down the length of his shoulder, down the leg, and to the bottom of his hoof. Keep track of how many hands it took to work your way down. I had a horse that was 15.4 hands.

a hand is 4 inches - so if your pony was 48 in it would be 12 hands
