Well contrary to other folks posts on here, most of the sci-fi channels shows are extremely nerdy and horrible. But this is the huge exception. You really should give it a try. I liked the campy garbage version from the late 70's, but then again I was 6 at the time and didn't know any better.
Here is the basic concept of the show. A human race created a machine (Cyclons), they went to war with those machines, and the machines left and moved to another planet (sounds kind of similar to the Terminator plot slightly). But years later, they came back and destroyed the 12 colonies (planets) where the humans were living on and wiped out the entire race except for a small fleet of 40,000+. Now they are hunting them down to kill the rest of them and the humans are trying to escape the Cylon rath.
Now that the geeky sci-fi part is out, lets get to the drama part and this is the great part of the show, the interpersonal relationships of the characters. The Cylons can and do appear in human form in the fleet, some dont even know they are a Cylon. The greatest mind of the humans inadvertantly helped the Cylons penetrate the humans defense system allowing the Cylons to kill most all of the humans. The commander of the last remaining war ship has a son that he has a problematic relationship with. This is just the surface of the beginning of the show.
My friend told me before watching it that it was, oddly enough, a really religious show and he is right. The humans are the ones who believe in many Gods (12 colonies represent the signs of the Zodiac), they worship the Greek Gods, while the Cylon machine race worships one true God. It is hard to explain the whole show just in short paragraphs, but there is a reason it is rated as a top 5 show by the NY Times, and Entertainment Weekly.

Battlestar is less about the Sci Fi and more about the Human Drama. I would say watch the miniseries that kicked off the current series. If you are still not interested then the show is probably not for you. I have included a couple of links so you can catch up. But the best way to do that is to watch the 1st and 2ns seaons that are out on dvd

Battlestar Galactica is an awesome show that is a commentary on war and politics. Lots of non-sci-fi fans love it too because it's so intelligently written. You can actually go watch all the episodes over on Fanpop in the Battlestar Galatcica Spot:

I've only seen the original Battlestar Galactica, with Lorne Green. It was about a group of humans fleeing across the void, looking for a new home after their original one was destroyed by the Cylons, a cybernetic society that hated humans and are out to wipe them out. Watching such does not make you a geek or nerd. Watching such exclusively does; well--not necessarily. Other things have to be taken into account.

It is very good. Yes it IS Sci-Fi, but it also has some elements of serious drama, and even a little soap opera feel to it. Try not to think about it being like its predecessor... about the only similarities are the main characters' names.. and the Colonial Viper ships. Pretty much everything else is totally different. Hell it's even lasted longer than the original, and shows no signs of slowing down.

It is actually an insightful drama. It is simply set in a different locale and the characters are not real. You shouldn't worry about watching the scifi channel, a lot of its programming is not nerdy.
