Virtual memory is an extension of your computer's physical memory (memory chips or RAMs). In order to be able to run multiple programs at once, the computer looks for areas of RAM that have not been used recently and copy them onto the hard disk into so called page files. This frees up space in the RAM to load the new application.
The hard drive (virtual memory) is much slower than actual memory chips. When you don't have enough RAM, the operating system has to constantly swap information back and forth between RAM and the hard disk. This is called thrashing, and it can make your computer feel incredibly slow.

Virtual memory is what windows calls a swap file. Basically, your running what sounds like a memory intensive program and windows is using part of your hard drive as a temperary "memory". This is usually makes things grind to a halt as virtual memory is much slower than your actual physical ram. To prevent this, close anything you dont need that is running in the background when you are using your program, which will free up physical ram. You can also adjust the size of your swapfile under "system" in control panel. You can also buy more Ram to put in your computer if you keep running out.

In an effective machine, you should never be using "Virtual Memory" ... it means your machine doesn't have enough physical memory or "RAM" to work effectively, so it uses the hard drive to help out. Easiest way to fix it is to turn up your virtual memory in windows, but the right way to do it is to buy more RAM. Nowadays you should have AT LEAST 512, but preferably 1 GB depending on what you do with your computer

When your primary memory (RAM) is not sufficient the computer uses hard disk as a memory to store data for some time. This is called as virtual memory.
To increase virtual memory:
control panel>system>advanced>performance>settings>advanced>change>enter new size.
