stem cells or more specifically Embryonic stem cells are the cells that make up the embryo before they start differentiating into different organs (well technically the 3 different layers)
when a sperm fertilizes an egg, the resulting cell starts dividing to form a ball of cells, these cells still don't know what they are going to end up being, these are the stem cells researchers use.
fetus refers to a a much later stage in development when you can recognize body forms and organs,

Research can be done on fetal cells, cells from the placenta, or on adult stem cells. The most promising research is on fetal cells, because unlike the other cells, they are not differentiated, and have the capacity to develop into any type of cell in the body.
Fetal cell research uses embyos from IV clinics that are not going to be used by the owner (the woman who created the eggs). Most women have many more eggs stored than they will ever use for implantation. There are two choices for these embryonic cell clusters; use them for research (which will destroy them) of dispose of them in a biohazard incinerator. Either way, they will NEVER become babies, because they cannot legally be implanted in a woman without the permission of the owner.

It doesn't destroy eggs. When people go to infertility clinics the procedure isn't always successful. Extracting eggs and fertilizing them is at the moment a numbers game. Even when they are fertilized the embryos don't always take and the process must be retried. However, after the couple have fertilized and developed an embryo there are many leftover. These embryos will either be destroyed eventually or put to use in research and eventually may be used to create any number of useful cures and treatments.
So stem-cell research actually uses embryos instead of destroying them meaninglessly.

It doesn't. Stem-cells research is done by using the purified clean cells in the umbilical cord of babies. It is the belief of this country that such practice will cause the use, abuse and commercialization of fetuses and babies just for stem-cell use. That is not true. Stem-cell treatments have been going on around the world for many years now. I got my 4th stem-cell transplant 6 years ago. The first 3 were from sheep cells and the last one (and long lasting one) was from human stem-cells. I was diabetic and losing hope of using any type of insulin because of allergies and incompatibility of insulin with my body. I have been free of insulin for the past 6 years thanks to the stem-cell treatment. Got my first 3 treatments in Germany and Switzerland. The last one was done at the Toronto University in Canada.
Unfortunately in the US is a matter of "bureaucrazy" between the health industry and the millions of dollars they would lose if stem-cell treatment is approved.
Sad... but true.

they don't destroy eggs. embryonic stem cells are from fetus. stem cells are cells from a growing embryo. if they're specialized, they will chang into blood cells, somatic cells, nerve cells, skin cells, etc. stem cells are used because they still haven't specialzed. coz for that matter, scientists can manipulate them and then turn them into whatever cell they like (blood cell, skin cell) to treat diseases. for example, doiabetes. they may take embryonic stemm cells then turn them to pancreatic cells (beta cells, i think) to produce insulin. that's it. but it's too dangerous coz you're taking a cell from a developing fetus. this is too risky. the fetus may die.
