some people claim that she was shot down by the japanese. they claim there is no reason for flying around the world in the direction she took because it extended the trip due to winds by about 7000 miles. conspiracy theorists claim that she and FDR who were good friends planned a secret mission to gain surveillance of japanese activity in the area, and a reason for the united states to go searching there in the first place. even more evidence from soldiers -- both american and japanese -- claim to have seen amelia. an american soldier claimed to have found her journal and other belongings in a japanese military base. even others claim that she re-entered the united states following her release. still others say fdr would never put her up to the task, but she would have been the perfect candidate, because she was truly a great pilot.whether she landed or not who knows? anything could have happened to her. was she an early pow of wwii? possibly? does it change the fact that she's probably dead now? no. whether there was a cover-up or not, she was a great female american hero of her time, and that's what she'll be remembered as.

She didn't anticipate that the bad weather she was flying in, gave her bad gas mileage, so she was running out of gas, she had to land on a very small island in the fog, if she went past it, she would just be in the middle of the ocean, because there weren't any islands in that area close by, she did pass it, and she didn't know where she was, it was really foggy, then she ran out of gas and crashed her plane into the ocean..........
I have my own theory,,,,,,,,,, she found her own island, and landed and started a new life with her man.....

They assumed that she crashed because she and her plane were never seen again. She was attempting to fly across the Pacific if I recall!
