Some examples of substituents that will increase the reactivity of a benzene toward EAS are summarized below:

-O(-)
-OH
-OR
-OC6H5
-OCOCH3-NH2
-NR2
-NHCOCH3
-R
-C6H5

This gives you a feel for the variety of types of substituents you would prefer to have attached to the benzene ring to enhandce electrophilic aromatic substitution. You want something that is electron donating, or conjugates with the benzene ring, which can really enhance EAS reactivity.

bascially for substituent groups that increase the reactivity of the benzence ring, they would have to be electrone donating (which means the lone pair on the substituent group is delocalized into the benzene ring) or it has to be electron inducing.

Some strongly activating substituents are

NH2, -OH

for activating substituents,

-OR, NHCOR

for weakly activating substituents,

-R, -Ar
