A friend of mine burned her plastic microwave door which was located above the stove. It was the way her apartment was set up. There was smoke all over the room from the burning plastic. Is this plastic poisonous? If so, is there a good way to get rid of the poison in the air?

Burnt plastic produces dioxins which are toxic, do not break down easily in the environment, and build up in the food chain. It is also unsafe to breathe in the smoke

All plastics give off noxious odors when heated; but not all are poisonous. You would have to get in touch with the manufacturer to find out. To vent the odors use a fan to pull air from the outside, or to pull air out of the room through a window to the outside. If you don't have a fan large enough, open all windows and let the air circulate as long as possible. There will probably be some lingering odor for a while; it will dissipate on its own eventually.

Sheesh! Your friend needs to see her landlord about that set-up!

And yes, burning plastic can give off poisonous fumes. You'll want to use the vents and fans to try to get them out. And meanwhile get the microwave removed so there won't be a repeat of the incident.

Good luck.

Open the windows and get a fan to circulate the air and have one fan blowing air out the window. I think the fumes are toxic. She should be careful.

hello there....First understand this idea---> Can u burn plastic! it would want to also be counted on the kind of plastic you're burning!!! properly plastics are specifically HYDROCARBONS! so burning them specifically launch CO2 and Water! Many plastics, quite %even as burned resuts in emissions of the deadly poison named dioxin. Dioxin is a poisonous organic and organic chemical that includes chlorine and is produced even as chlorine and hydrocarbons are heated at severe temperatures. To inhalate dioxin or to be uncovered besides to its fumes may reason many deadly outcomes. "dioxin - a poisonous organic and organic chemical it would want to also be counted on the kind of plastic you're burning. wish it helped :)" properly of direction it is going to be counted on the kind of plastic. do we nip this contained in the bud previously we initiate getting everyone wondering that each and every one "plastics" yield dioxin even as burned! Dioxins (as in polychlorinated dibenzodioxins) will be formed even as burning chlorine containing polymers, the most elementary being %. although, it really is wisely worth noting that they is often generated evidently in such issues as wooded area fires and volcanic interest. Dioxins are literally not released contained in the burning of non-halogen containing polymers, for this reason polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutenes, polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate, polyvinyl acetate - none of those will launch something except carbon dioxide, and water (or some carbon monoxide, if burned in enclosed areas). the purely authentic elements utilized in polyolefins (polyethylene/polypropylene) are pigments, antioxidants and fillers - fillers commonly do not burn, and pigments and antioxidants will purely generate very small quantities of combustion products as they are purely contemporary in very small volume. Black plastics are commonly colored black using colloidal carbon, which will burn to variety carbon dioxide.
