My favorite sad country song is "I'll Never Be In Love Again" By Don Williams. It is a bit older but it is really good.

You're on the right track looking for sad songs. Country is where the addest of the sad songs generally exist.

In modern times, Blake Sheldon recorded a real tear-jerker with "The Baby" and Johnny Cash's remake of the Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" is also extemely melencholy, although the video makes it exponentially sadder.

The Irish standard "Danny Boy", wriiten about the death of the author's dog, is makes grown men weep. Mostly due to the fact that it is usually sung at the funeral's of great and heroic men.

The greatest sad song, and the saddest great song of all time, without a doubt, must be "I'm so Lonesome I Could Cry", by Hank Williams Sr. The level of depression that it must have taken to pen the lyrics is extemely evident in the song's delivery and anyone who has ever felt the way Hank did would have to agree that it is indeed the saddest song of all time.
