It is a beautiful city and everyone I met was incredibly nice. I was seriously lost and had to ask directions and everyone went above and beyond duty to be certain that I knew where I was going and how to get there. I have a very heavy red-neck Southern accent, too, but no one laughed or acted snooty. Quebec was lovely, too. I hope to return one day, when I am not lost. By the way, Canada is a beautiful, friendly place.

Being from Montreal, but having lived also in the USA for 7 yrs, I can say that the perception is as many have mentionned. Foreign and beautiful. Nice and historical. A taste of France perhaps, just a little. GREAT FOOD !! Yes for sure.
BUT unfortunately americans do notice that in Montreal their not as polite. And sometimes can be seen as rude. A lot of people smoke here too, which americans don't do as much.
So there are good and bad views.
You can also get some very unique clothing here, which is appealing. Great shopping (too high taxes on it all) and great food.

Montreal is the place all New England college students flock to, as the drinking age is 18 instead of 21, and there are a great many sex toy shops and strip clubs. The people are fine, no different from people anywhere in the United States except many of them speak French. I have no feelings about the province of Quebec.

I visited Montreal the summer of 2005 and I had a wonderful time. The people, sites, and food were incredible and it is an "american" friendly city.

charming, historical, and cultured. More interesting and laid back than English Canada. somewhat exotic. Nice place to live and exist.
