I have lived all over the United States and I moved to Mid-Michigan in 1997 and I fell in love. The best thing is the people. The people here are the friendliest and most thoughtful. Take for instance one evening in December my mother and I were driving and my car had a problem and broke down. A man and his family were coming home from church and they stopped to ask if we needed help. We said yes. He didnt have enough room in his vehicle with all his family in it so he took them home and he came back and drove us several miles to my mothers boyfriends home. He stayed to make sure we were ok and would not accept money or anything for his troubles. I am originally from the east coast and have been on the west coast as well and you can be sure that i have never run across that anywhere else. That is not the only time something like that has happened to me. To reciprocate I have picked up complete strangers (men and women) and given them rides when the temperature gets in the extremes.
Now I live in a small town and dont recommend this when you live in the city. People all have their own agendas there. But you can be sure if you are in a rather rural area of Michigan and have a problem there will be someone to help you.
Also I have the most wonderful and thoughtful neighbors. I live in an apartment complex and there are people of all ages here. We in this courtyard all look out for each other. We watch each others children and cook when another is sick etc.
We also have a great school system here and wonderful colleges and universities.
I hope i answered your question satisfactory.

I enjoy the moisture, all the green vegetation, wildlife and how friendly the people are. I lived in Colorado most of my life; but had a job opportunity to move to the Northern lower part 7 years ago and wont go back to Colorado. Having retired from the military I have seen a large part of this planet and Michigan is home. Cheers

Im from LA and Ive been in SE michigan for 10 years.
I hate the weather
But yes, it seems like the people are, in general, more trustworty than in a place like LA, where it seems like everyone is looking for ways they can scam you.
The economy is the pits right now, and its not expected to get drastically better any time soon.

We don't have to deal with all the weather problems the lower states have like the tropical storms.
We have the best of all worlds. We can do the winter sports and summer sports all year.
The great lakes to vacation on are great to.
