You people seem to be missing the point. Do police kill people who have stolen a car? No. So why kill someone (and their dog) for stealing a PS3? It makes no sense to me at all.

But how could police know that someone who had just stolen a Play Station would be holding a play station controller in his hand? Surely no one could have expected that...

"armed robbery?": According to the link in the question, the robbery victim was struck with a blunt object. There was no indication in that article that any kind of gun was used in that robbery, just a blunt object. And even if there were guns, there is a huge difference between rifles, shotguns, and a handheld controller. I can't imagine ever getting those mixed up. If they knew he had those guns, they should have known he wasn't holding any of them.

The fact is the police felt threatened without solid evidence and that gut reaction cost a person his life. It's easy to dismiss it since a crime was involved, but think about it the next time you get pulled over. . .

"18-year-old man suspected in an armed robbery of two PlayStation 3"

They went to arrest someone suspected of armed robbery. That means he had a weapon of some kind. I want to see you go up to a house to arrest someone who you think has a weapon, he had three in the house "a hunting rifle and two shotguns - which were in Strickland's room," the guns were unloaded but he had them in his room.

So to answer your question yes apparently Strickland thought 2 playstations 3 were worth dieing for.

Look if he hadn't committed (allegedly) armed robbery, the police wouldn't have went to his house. All he had to do way buy them himself and not (allegedly) use blunt object on someone else to steal them.

His actions brought the police his house, and when the police go after an armed robber, they are going to be a little on edge, and then all it takes is for someone to do something stupid for the shots to begin.

So don't steal, don't commit armed robbery, and have some feeling for the person who got hit with a blunt object and had their property stolen from them.

EDIT

No I think you missed the point, this person was accused of ARMED robbery, and from what I read, he may have had something in his hand, (maybe a controller). Do you want the police to wait until he starts shooting and maybe kills someone? I can see it now this guy starts shooting and kills a pregnant woman and you'd be bitching that the police didn't do enough to stop him. Again if he didn't break the law the police wouldn't have been there.

Here try this in less then one second tell me what I'm pulling out of my pocket, if you guess wrong and I have a gun you're dead, if you guess wrong and shoot me and I don't have a gun, you get investigated and maybe send to jail along with a lot of bad press saying how you should have been more careful. Ready, GO, WRONG. See no matter what you can't win.

Sounds like they need to investigate for details-but It also sounds like he didn't care about the guys life who they beat up and stole his property which set all this into motion.I know it's easy to say police did wrong but you weren't there and the fact was it was an armed robbery and all for a playstation maybe we should be saying what's wrong with people, How would you feel if you drove home and were beat up and robbed would you be so outraged?

It's hard to know the entire story. Did the cops only know it was a playstation? Did the teen act in a threatening way? I know cops aren't trained to just shoot kids. I'd like to konw more about what this kid did.

As a law abiding citizen, I find it very sad that a person died while stealing a toy. But stealing is a crime. The police probably told the thief to halt and he didn't and he died! Why are you taking the side of a common criminal? Maybe there'd be less crime if the punishments were harsher. I'm not in favor of shooting to kill, but I do think we are too lenient in this country. Other countries have lower crime rates and much harsher sentences. If you don't steal, you have nothing to worry about.

I don't understand what the big fuss is about PS3. It was just a big marketing stunt to put them out around christmas and under produce them. What other explanation is their? It is sad that people want them so bad that they will steal and die for them.

Don't just blame the police. They were put into a situation that they shouldn't have been in. Our entire approach to crime needs to be reaccessed. Retrubution is not a postive motive to handle social misfits.
