Why do people have the stereotype that British guys are all secretly gay?

A friend of mine was telling me that British guys are all secretly gay, I've heard this said before and where does this idea come from?

Hee hee thats a good one.... as a UK guy I find that really funny. You don't say if your friend is male or female so I'll have to keep this one general, one size fits all type answer. English men tend to be more comfortable in the company of women and maybe not intimidated as easily as our US counterparts, you know, normal conversation rather than pretend macho crap, ring any bells over there?
English men on the whole are respectful towards females, and speaking from experience that does'nt hold me back as reguards getting girlfriends,quite the opposite. Is it jealousy do you think? Maybe British guys are more charming because you can see the person not the image.... trust is everything in relationships most British guys prefer getting to know a woman first, not trying to b******t her to try and get an advantage,Any more bells ringing yet girls? Sound like anyone you know? If being a gent is being confused with being gay then the "stereotypes" held by the British about American's are sadly and unfortunately true. Maybe if its a female friend of yours you were talking about.... a guy letting her down gently because she's not attractive does'nt mean he's gay, just thoughtful of her feelings. Is that such a strange concept over there? Insecurity in American male culture wow that would make a great study if I was at college, I would have too much data to work with, it would be too easy. You see there's the thing, finally got to my point, British men are more comfortable with themselves, American men are not so, they need reassuring all the time that they are living up to their own stereotypes, sheep baaaa! quite contend to follow the one in front makes 'em feel better, poor things. Kids over here still use the saying, sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me. Time to grow up America and stop reacting to your own insecurities by calling people names.It just allows people from other countries to laugh at you more than they do already. Have a think about it. Thats if your not already foaming at the mouth, truth hurts don't it cousin.....

British men are often conservative (sometimes even shy or prudish) which surprises women (american and british alike). British women are used to kind of dominating their men and the men, who have been dominated by mother and aunts, seem to be used to this. British men are not all gay, but they are not the kind of aggressive men that Americans or Australians can be.

Personally, I have always loved English men - but i prefer the ones that come here to America to the ones that never leave england.
