Yes, it is worth it.
Sony loses money on every Playstation 3 they sell. It costs them over $800 to build each machine.
"To give an example of how cutting-edge the design is, in the entire history of the iSuppli Teardown Analysis team, we have seen only three semiconductors with 1,200 or more pins. The Playstation 3 has three such semiconductors all by itself," Rassweiler noted. "There is nothing cheap about the Playstation 3 design. This is not an adapted PC design. Even beyond the major chips in the Playstation 3, the other components seem to also be expensive and somewhat exotic."

Well, ask yourself this question. The X-Box 360 console itself has a price tag of $400.00. It does not have the ability to play HD movies unless you purchase a $200.00 add on. Therefore, $400.00 + $200.00 = $600.00. In the long run, an X-Box 360 system costs just as much as a Playstation 3. Upside to a PS3 as apposed to an X-Box 360, PS3's have free online play. Microsoft charges $60.00 per year. Everything the PS3 does in 1080p, the X-Box 360 does in 720i. Yes the X-Box 360 has more games available right now, but that is because it has been out longer than the PS3. If you are a Halo fan, pick up an X-Box 360. Otherwise get a PS3. The majority of the rest of the games will be on both consoles. However, be careful with the X-Box 360. It has been known to be a fire hazard if it is not given enough space around the power brick. Honestly the PS3 is actually a good value for the money you are putting into it. The Blueray technology is even more expensive than that. Do a search online for how much blueray players costs and you will be shocked.
If you are looking to use it just for a game console it really isn't worth the money, the 360 gives you equal if not better graphics atm. Just remember it takes a good 12-16 months before games catch up to what a console can really do. Next Christmas you jaw might drop at what is out, and hopefully the price will drop at the same rate as your jaw *crosses finger*
Personally I don't need to pick up a PS3 until Final Fantasy XIII and if it take anywhere near the time it took Square-Enix to pump out Final Fantasy XII i should get the bundle really cheap. :-D

Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft all break even or take a small loss on the sale of their gaming systems.
What they make their money on is the overpriced games. So, the ps3 system is worth whatever it is listed at, but Sony won't make a dime off of it.

i don't really want to buy something for $600, but yes it is. it has a blue ray player and those are hella expensive about $1000. and then there is the game system. but then if u have no need for a dvd player that can read dvd's that hold 33.5 gigabytes, then the blu ray is pointless. its up to u

Yes because it has a BluRay player, and those run for about 1000 dollars alone. But still, I think the BluRay player was totally unnecessary. Buy a Wii. They're cheap and more fun.
