I am graduating from Pace University this spring with my BA in Communication Media Studies. I recently decided I want to become a teacher. Is it possible to go to Grad school to become a teacher without a BA in education?

Yes, that's what all teachers need. Usually, it's a 2 year program.

Okay depending what state you live in there are few options...being a teacher, I'll fill you in. Most teachers have a degree in education (as wrongfully stated by someone above...)but if you want a teaching degree...you can either

1.) get your post back in education in a 1 year fast track program or 2 year program at a college

2.) You can get emergency certified through the state (most states need teachers) however this certification is only good for a year or two. (but could get you by while you got your real certificate)

3.) You can get your substituting certificate as long as you have a BA in something and try out teaching to see if its what you really want to do.

I teach at a school which has a masters' cert for elem ed. At the school at which I became certified (a different one), it was through the masters' cert program -- these avenues ARE common, yet are not the prime certification method, which is undergraduate education at the baccalaureate level.

Don't worry about schools not wanting to pay you masters' pay. That has NEVER been an issue with me; in fact, they do better in the public's eyes when they have graduate degrees. The difference is not much financially, so get the masters' all the way. It usually means an extra foundations course and a research course, but that's it. Good luck!!

Yes, but getting a teaching degree when you already have a Master's degree in Education is very difficult because many districts don't want to pay that high salary. Unless you want to teach on a college level, where a Master's or Doctorate are important, you should just apply to a college in a Certificate Program. It takes about a year or a year and a half to get that certificate. Usually 30 credits and a semester of student teaching. Good luck.

I believe depending on your actual BA degree you can take some additional courses in the area of teaching and certification and possibly some in a concentration you may need to add in order to get certified as a teacher. I would ask the Career Councilors office they should be able to connect you with the resources in your area and that way you can get the specific courses you need to do it.

Yes it can be done, yes it means some additional time in school, but you may be able to connect to a certification program in your state that will allow you to student teach as you finish needed course work. This is a great way to make some $ and get the additional schooling you may need.

I wish you luck, and if you need more specific information contact me and I will dig up all I can from my sources.

Rarely do teachers have a BA in education. They usually have a BA in history or English or science or math or physical education., or another subject. Then they enter a Masters in Education program where they get a master's degree plus their teacher certification.

Yes, you can do a Master's program. There are also programs that offer post-graducate teacher licensure programs. That would probably end up taking less time (by a little bit) and costing less.
