would hope they'd do a little better--but not seeing any great moves this off season (SO FAR) --so maybe that hope will be lost

I don't see it. Playoffs were a good result.

But the Dodgers are competitve for their division, and the Cubs/Astros/Marlins/Phils etc will be competitive for the wild card.

So I think at the moment the Padres would struggle to make the playoffs again.

Sorry, check that. Mets will compete for the Wild Card, The Marlins are running away with that division. What was i thinking.

Well, let's consider this: one of the most respected managers in the game leads them to two straight playoff appearances for the first time in club history and they basically tell him to take a hike.
Then they trade a second baseman rookie who showed signs of speed, good defense and good hitting for relief pitcher and a guy who hasn't proven himself as a major leaguer yet.
Then they let the speedy leadoff hitter Dave Roberts go.
They let a couple of their key bullpen guys go.
They haven't signed jack squat.
One thing going for them is their starters...as long as they keep them.
Their GM is obviously an idiot though.
Right now, they look alot worse.

I don't think they have a prayer of doing better than they did last year. With no moves being made and no amazing guys on the roster anyway I really don't see them doing much of anything.

Ask the same question next week after the close of the winter meetings. We'll all have a better idea then.
