For fruit, just dig a hole in the ground and step close to it, select your fruit and the option bury will be available, select it and the fruit will be buried and sprout a tiny tree.
For shovels, you only have one chance a day. Find the glowing location and dig it up to recieve 1000 bells. Then take the spare shovel you have and drop it in with bury. In a few days you'll have a golden tree, shake it and a golden axe will fall out.

you buy 2 shovels. dig a hole in the dirt & go to ur items. on shovel pick bury & the shovel gets buried. if u bury a shovel in a glowing spot (after u got the money) when the tree grows completely and u shake it, a gold shovel comes out.
(this is for animal crossing for gamecube)

You use a shovel, dig a hole, and then drop the shovel or fruit into the hole, cover the hole up with dirt.
