I have climbed Mt Washington NH and all of the peaks on the Presidential Range [ the mountain range the mt.washington is a part of ] many times and in all months of the year.
Let me answer your last question first.
Under no conditions what so ever should you make Mt. Washington in winter conditions the first mountain you climb-you may not live to climb another mountain. The mountainis a killer
more people have died climbing it than any other US mountain. The highest recorded wind velocity on earth -231 mph- was recorded on it's summit ,add to that the often body and mind numbing temps and you can easily find yourself in trouble fast. Check with the Mount Washington Observatory for weather and Appalachian Mountain Club [ AMC] located in Pinkham Notch NH for up to date info and history
Many a time I have sat on the porch of the AMC base lodge and attached a set of crampons to my boots prior to heading up the ravine tail .Under winter conditions an ice axe ,crampons , snowshoes and a minus 20 or better sleeping bag are necessary. This results in really heavy pack weights.
OK back to you questions
1) yes avalanches frequenty do occur -sometimes in the slab form
2] at 6288 ' altitude sickness is not an issue
3) Under early fall conditions with minimal pack weight I've done Hermit Lake to summit and back in under 4 hours---not a record by any means. I am positive that the Hut boys could put that to shame. AMC has basicallly a group of small inns along the ridge line of the presidentials . Almost everything needed to supply those is carried up there using human power- hut boys
4] you can do it solo- just not in winter . Early September is ideal no big nasty T-storms to deal with. You don't know what fear is until you have found yourself above timberline an a very exposed situation and all of the hair on your body stands on end.
6) I did my first climb at 17
7) Since you are no longer considering a winter climb you should carry at the minimum :
a gore tex parka and a pile pullover
a hat which will cover your ears
adequate food and water
a map and know how to read one
med to heavy weight hiking boots
Why so heavy ?
because you spend a lot of your time negotiating either talus slopes or just rocky trails and a boot that offers good torsional resistance and mid -sole cushioning works best.
And the most important you can carry on this and any other mountain you may climb is humility. There are just some days that the mountain can't be climbed.
have fun & be careful
