Do NOT tune the same as a 6 string! It places waaaay too much tension on the neck

The first set... the set that has the thickest strings, is tuned one step below a regular guitar D A F C G D. The second set are tuned so that the first 2 strings (the D and A) are in unison, then the remaining strings (F C G D) are tuned one octave higher.

If you want to have the same notes as a 6 string, use a capo.

no can do mate-even with the actuality that i really wish i ought to!!the proper element to do really is get a capo on and play the music a touch more beneficial to make it sound a touch sweeter-an outstanding piece of advice got here from yet another answer-if you're recording-doubletrack it and play the chords in diverse places to get that fuller sound,my acoustic pedals and electric powered pedals have presets for a 12 string sound yet ive got here upon you get a extra valuable one through messing with the presets and searching your human being putting that matches you.there are certian tunings that you'll be able to do to regulate the guitar or make it sound a particular way-google the keith richards tuning approach in case you want to sound like the strolling riff himself,or option tunings are to be got here upon through a similar approach. i commonly locate that the unique way is sweet and doubletrack it-purely probs there are that you gotta really plat in sync to get that distintive 12 string sound and under no circumstances a multitude!! i wouldnt advise a 12 string to you till you get carry of vast funds to spend on a excellent variety-they're infamous for going out and sound bloody awful at the same time as they do-a lot worse than a six string-in case you want to get one which wont try this identity have round 450 quid accessible for a lifelike new one-or three hundred for a good 2d hand one-in my opinion though identity stick with multi-monitoring-or extra valuable nevertheless detect a pal to play with and get the sound between you! good success and keep it up!

They are just smaller strings with the same notes. They're used to make a fuller sound.
So the tuning is E,E, B,B, G,G, D,D, A,A, E, E

12 strings are used mainly for chords.
