Good question. Laptops generally cost more than desktops for what you get. Desktops can be aquired for only a few hundred dollars, while laptops start at around 500-600 dollars. Trust me, you really don't want a 500 dollar laptop either. For a quality laptop with a decent Intel CPU, 1GB of Ram, and 80-100GB of Hard Drive storage space, I would highly recommend the IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads. The R60, or Z60 series specifically, as they are the budget line, yet uses alot of parts from the flagship T60 line. A Thinkpad configured to your specs will set you back maybe $900. It really depends what your using it for, if your a uni student, busienss person who travels or someone who has limited space a laptop would be the best way to go, but if not then i suggest go with a desktop, the reason i say this is because a number of reasons 1) lets face the facts most laptops are alot slower compared to what a desktop can put out 2) once the warranty runs out on a laptop and something goes wrong nad you need a new part then it could get very expensive (im talkin $2000 bucks just for a mother board) but desktops are so generic with there parts that it could cost as little as $50 on a mother board) 3) the screens are bigger and with a desktop you have the option to upgrade on more of your parts. Get a Sony I have only herd good things about them, they also have a pretty good warranty on them. Do not go Acer, Toshiba ,Dell or HP, as they all have really bad warranty terms and the parts cost more then a brand new high end laptop, trust me i know i work for a computer repair company and I see the above brands (laptops brought in almost every day) Sony and Asus are the best way to go.

Depends what your are going to do, In my oppinion the desktop will always be better because they are open and the parts dont get hot as easy. Since the laptop is small and tight the parts heat up easier and preformance will suffer. All the laptops I have ever had work fine unless you play a game on it. If you are just working on homework and surfing the internet & such get a laptop and use the wireless benefits. If you plan to do some gaming get a pc. I just built an AMD 64X2 dual core computer its boss

The brands are pretty equal. The desktop will be easier to fix and upgrade but that is not important today as everything is old after a couple of years. I have 5 laptops. I love them all and would never go back to desktop because they are portable. I like taking comp to bed with me. And in the car. And to work. and on.

Get an Apple MacBook, or MacBook Pro. They are kind of on the pricey side, but totally worth it! They DO run on intel processors, and you can customize them to however much space you want on them. Or, some already have a ton of space. They have fun pre-installed programs on them such as, iChat (IM service, you can use your AIM SN for it), iTunes, GarageBand (Music making-software), iCal (personal calender you can sync to your iPod), AdressBook (personal adress book that syncs to your iPod), PhotoBooth(you can take pictures with cool effects with the inter web cam), iMovie (edit movies and record yourself through the bulit in camera), and a ton more!

depends on what ur using ur computer for. if your a gamer, get an AMD desktop, if ur a multi-tasker, email-checker, get an intel. Desktops are more powerful and robust than laptops. 500 dollars is a great desktop, but a crappy laptop

I love my new Dell laptop! You need to consider what you will be using the computer for. Will you really need to be mobile? You get less for the dollar on a laptop for the portability.

Desktop, if you don't really need the portability.
Laptops are nice, but they overheat, need batteries and can be dropped.
A Desktop is cheaper and easier to maintain and to upgrade.
