They get fired. Sorry, but they sign that everything is accurate when they sign. Talk to them and make sure it wasn't an honest mistake--like, who remembers what they made 5 years ago, or writing a wrong phone number, but if it's something important you have to take action.

its a delicate balancing act here. What exactly was the lie about? Did it have a direct influence upon hiring him/or her? Not justifing it,...but good jobs are hard to find, look into the motivation behind it.
I am not condoning falsehoods here,...but if the employee has been loyal and honest while working for you? It might be easier to allow them to stay , than it would be to fire, hire and then train a new one.
I WOULD confront them about it, tell them that I was keeping them on, but i would demand 100% honesty on all things. As far as firing straight out for dishonesty? I'd make sure my own house was in order before I started waving my own moral "whoop stick" into the fray. There are many reasons why folks lie,....not all are sinister.

I think that you should confront the employee and discuss the issue calmly with him/ her. They should be given a change to explain themselves.
