They are not educated on the subject. It is not addictive. It does not always led the user to harder substances. It does not affect the motor skills as severely as alcohol does. It does not diminish brain capacity.
Want to get educated? google "Laguardia Report."
It was outlawed to directly effect the deportation of Mexican migrant workers during the great depression, mostly in the western states, and became a political rallying call during the 1950"s
It has not always been illegal. It grew naturally in the US for thousands of years.
If it is legalized, crime rates would drop. Peoples lives would not be ruined because they were sent to prison for possesion. If it were legalized and controlled, it could bought and sold like tobacco and alcohol. If sold legally, there would be no need to grow your own. Pot can be be genetically altered and grown to specific thc content, and could be regulated as the alcohol content of beer and wine is regulated. If cops turn a "blind eye", then why have the laws on the books. They do not turn a blind eye. They will haul you in, and make life miserable for the offender, or threaten the person into turning in the supplier.
It should be legal, and let the person decide if he/she wants to buy it. just like alcohol, beer, wine and liquer.
Those people in rehab, are not pot smokers. They are substance abusers. Probably crack heads, heroin addicts, alcoholics or just mentally deficient. I have known many, many pot smokers, and none have been in rehab, psychiatric treatment, or ever been involved in car wrecks while stoned, domestic abuse, or violence of any kind.

saying your brother that smoked pot for 20 years has a bain tumor because of the pot is like saying sugar is the reason why a person that eats sweets all the time, is fat!!!
it isn't the substance's fault! its the person who abuses the substance.
drink alcohol for 20 years every day and see what kind of health effects, physically and psychologically, it has on you!
does it have the same effects if you don;t abuse it, but you still drink it occasionally over a 20 year period?? no it don't!
rehab center for pot smokers??? i have been to places where peopel were in rehab for drugs, but only once have i ever met someone who was there because they couldn't quit smoking pot.
but if you quit smoking cigarettes, and substitute pot for them, what the heck do you expect??!
sometimes people that are busted with possession are court ordered to go to the group sessions at rehab centers. i have seen plenty of that! but only one that was actually locked in rehab for mary j!
i'm not saying it isn't addicting, because everything on the planet that is enjoyable is habitforming, if you want to repeat the action enough!
i suppose the rehab center just lets people wonder around and ask people what they are in there for huh?

Most people aren't educated about it's effects. They just know those retarted commercials that show the guys smoking pot hitting the girl on the bike. There are three things wrong with that. First, if the pot was the cause of that, it was only because there was so much smoke in the car. Second, they only moved like 2 feet after buying food so there was no way they were going fast enough to do any major damage. Third, the commercial would have been better at telling kids on bikes to look before pulling around the corner of a building. So basically its all crap. Besides, most people smoke pot because its illegal, like all the kids under 18 who smoke.

I don't smoke pot but consider it to be a relatively benign substance that has many positive effects. Any educated person already knows that it is not physiologically addictive. Unlike the legal drugs, tobacco, alcohol and caffiene it does no real harm to the users.
In my personal opinion, the laws are in serious need of updating but so long as there are so many uneducated and narrow minded people who are not interested in the facts it will continue to be illegal. Again, personal opinion but I have told all my children I would prefer they smoke pot than drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes.

G'day cincywahine,
Thank you for your question.
Some are, some aren't. Some people think that the negatives of legalisation or decriminalisation outweigh the positives.
There are points of both sides so it is possible to adopt positions on either side based on a factual assessment. However, there are other people who base their beliefs on emotions rather than facts.
Seasons greetings.

It is not so much that they are against legalizing Pot that turns them off. I think it is because of the fear of making something legal that has always been illegal. You must remember that there has to be some control of any substance. Without control you have chaos. I think the real question is, do you think drawing a cloud of smoke into your lungs is a good thing? What we have with cigarettes is bad enough, but making a mood altering drug legal and not being able to control it would be a lot worse. A drug is a drug. Do you really need it in your life?

what a lot of people dont realise is if it was legal then it would still only be for medical use and it would be a pharmacutical listed drug taxed by the gov't
the way things are now the cops dont really care about pot smokers and will usually let them off or turn the other cheek
if you where smoking or growing marijuana without a prescription you would be stealing money from the government and the penalties would be much harsher
legalize it? yeah right..

Conversely, are people who are "for" Legalisation of marijuana really educated about its effects? Let it be acknowledged that everyone will have there own personal bias about this argument, so out of my bias, knowing how it effected me, I say keep it illegal! Seeing my friends now who continued down the marijuana path, its not a life I want for my kids, nor for my friends for that matter. Either way legalisation is not something we should rush into!

To you and some of your respondants (Alex), I work at a high school, and I have seen enough good kids change for the worse as soon as they got into pot. The body usually forgives, but the spirit is definately affected. But, I am sure you will get lots of answers that you like better than this one. I am sorry for you.
