1)There are 9 characters: Cloud Strife, Aerith Gainsborough, Tifa Lockhart, Barret Wallace, Red XIII (a.k.a. Nanaki), Yuffie Kisaragi, Cait Sith (a.k.a. Reeve), Vincent Valentine, Cid Highwind. Like a said before you control Sephiroth for one fight so you could technically count him too.

2) Lucricia gives birth to Sephirtoh. She has the child with Hojo and while the baby is still in the womb, Hojo injects the baby with the Jenova cells. Jenova is a parasite that came to Giga 2000 years before the start of the game on a meteor that stick the planet creating the great crator.

3) Zack has the buster sword and when he dies Cloud takes control of it so both Zack and Cloud is the answer.

4) Aerith is killed by one of the Sephirtoh clones in the Forgotten City. And no that is not Sephiroth, you never see the actual Sephiroth until the very last fight of the game. Every other time you see him it is a piece of Jenova trying to come back together. (Ever wonder why everytime you are poised to fight Sephiroth that you end up fighting Jenova instead or why on the boat you slice off Sephiroths arm and a tentical is sitting on the ground?) Honestly if you missed this you really missed a lot of the game.

5) Cloud never becomes Soldier. He fails he didn't quit for personal reasons. He doesn't have it in him to succeed. Cloud is stabbed though the gut by Sephiroth in the Nieblehiem Maco reactor then is taken to Shira Mansion for testing (which basically puts him into a state of perpetual shock). He never snaps out of it until after Zack dies and he takes over Zack's life and memories. Zack was Solider, not Cloud.

6) I'd argue this one but Sephiroth is the one you are looking for. Jenova is much more of a plot driving bad guy than Sephiroth was. As i said before you never see Sephiroth until you fight Safer Sephiroth inside of the Great Crater at the end of the game.
