I pick a valid checkpoint, computer restarts, and claims that system restore was unsuccessful and no changes have been made to my computer.

Unfortunately this sometimes happens if the restore points have been corrupted. But, a way around this sometimes is to reboot the pc into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key during boot-up. Then try doing a system restore from there. Good luck.

Well, maybe there is a corrupt file in the restore file itself. try choosing another restore point. Or sometimes, the file may have been attcked by a trojan, virus, etc?
