Question for Teachers. Other than money, why did you opt to get a Master's Degree? If you don't have it yet, is it a good idea to get one? Why? I'm in a Master's program right now, just not sure if its worth it.

Getting your Master's is DEFINITELY worth it - and not because of the money. I learned SO MUCH MORE about teaching during my graduate studies than I did in my undergrad. The things I learned were more practical and useful - real lesson ideas and help with classroom management techniques, rather than just studying theory and development. It could have been that I just had amazing professors, but I highly recommend sticking it out; I know how excited you must be to get started and have your own class (I was really chomping at the bit), but once you finish your Master's program and then start teaching, you will be so grateful that you did. You'll have more information AND you'll never regret not taking it all the way. There are many teachers at my school working hard in the evenings to complete a Master's program now...I was so glad that I had already done it. :o) Hope this helps!

I got mine before I started teaching. It is a good idea to get it. In the state I teach in, it is required by your fifth year of teaching, so I saved myself a lot of grief by getting it ahead of time. The other nice thing was that the program for my masters also got me certified, so I was ready to go after my year's program. Across the board, it's a good thing to have. However, I have to say that the classes I took were a joke and did little to prepare me for the classroom. The professors were sadly more interested in pushing ideological points and engaging in research for their publications and burnishing their resumes. The methods class was mildly helpful, but the rest really didn't do much for me, with the exception of occassionally making me think about myself and my theories on teaching. Student teaching on the other hand was essential and the best thing for me to learn about the art of teaching.
