The school that is right for you is a very personal pick. It's kind of like asking which color is the best color.
That said, personally I think a top state school is your best bet if you aren't sure what you really want to do. It'll give you a lot of options in terms of going between programs, and it'll be more affordable than a private school.
And, as someone who has interviewed and hired quite a number of people for a top management consulting firm, I can tell you that by and large an extremely expensive private school (ie. Harvard, Yale) doesn't help you get a job or command a higher salary any more than a degree from a top state school would (ie. UVA, UNC, Michigan, Cal, and others)
I should also mention that if you are a member of clubs and do activities, or have really good internships, that will carry a lot of weight as well.

Way too broad a question.
Check out www.collegeboard.com (which has a "college finder" feature) or http://www.princetonreview.com/college/default.asp (which has a "Counselor-O-Matic" feature) and the Fiske Guide to Colleges (library or purchase from amazon) and the US News and World Report best colleges rankings (online, subscribe for $15 a year.)
You need to think about the type of school you want, let alone which you can probably get into.
Location? Size? Size of classes? Type of school (e.g. liberal arts or business-focused, etc.)? How are your grades, SAT scores? Did you take SAT Subject Tests? ACTs? Have you taken a hard course load or a relatively easy one? What about extracurriculars and volunteer work and sports? Have you had a job (shows that you can balance work and school, assuming you did well in school.)
There are thousands of colleges in the country. You need to do some legwork to narrow it down yourself.

There are thousands of good colleges in the USA. Where do you want to go and spend 4 years of your life? Do you want urban, suburban or rural? In CA any UC school is good as are the CSU schools. The other question is what can you afford? It is all about finding a college that is good for you.

If you're looking at private schools, look at the Ivy League schools as well as Duke and Stanford. If you're considering public schools, then you should check out UC Berkeley, U of Michigan, and U of Virginia. If you're doing a technology related major, then consider MIT and Caltech.
