My laptop in my room is hooked to the network via wireless router that's downstairs. Can I hook up the PS2 in my room to my laptop to get online? I have a linksys router.

yes!
you can't use a regular network cable though. go to a computer store, office depot, staples, or a radio shack, and get a special cable called a crosslink cable. it looks the same, but the wires inside the insulation are wired differently so you can hook 2 machines together with no switch or router. plug one end into your ps2, the other end into your laptop. next get on your laptop, click on start/ connect to/ then show all connections. right click on your wireless connection, click on properties, then the advanced tab. turn on internet connection sharing. click on ok. your ps2 should be on the internet now. have fun!

i do it all the time. it works, trust me

no, need a wireless nic for your PS2 as well. (FYI the high end PS3 comes with and integrated wireless card factory installed)
