As a chem teacher, I always begin with this question.

Both involve the study of chemical substances, their properties and reactions and so on.

A chemist works on small scale experiments, as in a chemistry lab working with test tubes and flasks, etc

A chemical engineer works on large scale production as in a chemical plant working with pipes, tanks, pumps, etc.

Basically when a chemist discovers a cure for some disease, the chemical engineer must replicate the same procedure to produce product suitable for consumers to use.

A chemist is just a glorified cook while a chemical engineer is just a glorified plumber!
