As others have said, it's the pound sign, the English equivalent of the $. The value fluctuates but at the moment it's worth about $2.
Most of Europe (all the EU members) including Ireland have adopted a single currency, the Euro. The English were simply unwilling to give up their pound, in the same way that we Americans are unwilling to give up our system of measurements in favor of the metric system. So they cling to their pound, out of step with the rest of the continent!
