The bulk of this genre of music seems to induce mild depression. I was listening to these songs back to back in the car "I loved her first" and "Don't take the girl" (my husband LOVES country music, I can do without it) I have no idea who sings these songs, but by the time the latter song had finished playing, I was crying my eyes out!! Is this supposed to be uplifting entertainment? Oh my God!! My heart felt so sad inside because these really sounded like songs sung genuinely from experience and the life of the artists. I know rappers get a bad "rap", but at least Jay-Z and Tupac can tell a sad, sad story in verses that will have you bobbing your head to the beat and still get you amped up, feeling their spirit of overcoming these obstacles through creative poetry and rhyme and nice beats. I have nothing against country music, it's just a generally depressing form of expression. Why is that so?

Sorry, Can’t answer you question. But if you play it backwards you get your truck back, your dog back and your Husband/Wife back :)

Country is one of the only genres where we can actually understand the singer, so lyricists feel compelled to add bulk to their songs. Some other forms of music that either sound like gibberish or have over-production drowning out the lead singer don't really need to have substantial lyrics because we can't understand a what's going on.

Another theory is that country singers and bar owners are in cahoots. Sadness spawns the urge to drink more.

Maybe because the lyrics are easier to relate to almost everyone and they do have to use all the foul language in their lyrics to get a point across. County music is the only this I feel safe listening to with my children in the car.

By the way who says it has to be "uplifting entertainment"?

There must be something good in country music since there are some very big name rock singers who have done duets with country singers!

Never really thought about it.
But really I guess you have to look at the age group country music is directed to. so i guess you could say all ages. country music has also changed alot throught out history Charile Pride to Willie Nelson to Keith Urban. even tho it has changed people can still relate to every country song either now or further on in life and music like rap is very hard core "thugish" i would call it.
So think of the meaning of the song and than ask yourself is it really depressing? yes some is i agree

Do you think it could be the long notes they sing and the "lilt" in their voice? Because I find Country depressing even if they are singing happy stuff.

in my opinion i dont find it depressing i find it rather relaxing and entertaining the bass line in a country song when it hits is rather relaxing on the back when your seat vibrates and when people turn their heads and realize its no rap you are listening to
