I built this pc a few years ago. It has an atx form factor board originally from Abit with an sis chipset and 478 processor slot. Once I replace the mobo, do I have to replace the power supply? Does the new mobo come with a processor or do I have to get that seperately? The computer will be used for non-gaming purposes, i.e. just regular surfing, emailing, etc.

If you need any more details, let me know.

Right now, I have a Pentium 4 (478 pin), 60 gb Maxtor h/d, cd rom, floppy, ATI AGP video card w 32 mb, a 20 g slave h/d. I'm not sure how to read the specs for the power supply.

I plan on adding a dvd rw drive.

Great Question and thank you for participating in Yahoo's Q & A. You can purchase a new motherboard from any computer shop and cheaply in most cases. As far as using your old power supply from your present machine, think ahead about the equipment that you'd like to have in your new system, Dvd Burners, Cd Roms, Surround Sound, etc., and just make sure that the supply you use is capable of producing enough to handle it with a little to spare in case you decide later on to add more hardware. When selecting the right motherboard, make sure that you purchase enough Sdram Memory and a good video card with a lot of memory so that it can handle todays demanding online games. Think ahead so that you're not put into a position of having to upgrade just around the corner. It will save you a lot of money. Larry Radio Shack 01-9590

What I would do if I were you, using the machine just for browsing etc, would be to check out ebay, and bid on a mobo combo. Your power supply should be ok, provided the new board doesnt use a 24 pin connector. You probably have the older 20 pin power supply connector.

You will have to get a processor separately that is designed for the MB unless you buy a combo. You shouldn't have to replace the power supply unless you add other hardware like multiple HHD's or if you get a MB with dual processors, then you might need to to get a higher wattage. Also depending on MB you might even have to change memory sticks.

it's better you upgrade it to the latest version as microsoft is releaseing a windows vista and that's going to take up huge space and Vram. if you are not interested in replacing then it's better take it to the shop for replacing mother board and you will have to buy the processor again
