fenders are cheaper, have nice sized necks, and have single coil pickups, and gibsons are EXPENSIVE, have fatter necks and humbuckers.
i prefer ibanez, cuz the necks are thinner than fenders, and for me are much better sounding. my rg270 has a h/s/h pickup combo and a floyd rose tremolo. it was only about $300. but go with what you feel most comfortable with. don't let anyone tell you what you "should" play.

Id say Fender bcuz this way u can get a taste for electric and it wont kill your wallet lke a gibson. Also Fender is a top company, I have a fender and am very happy.

you should get one of the fender starter packs at guitarcenter.com or musicianfriend.com
if you want a guitar that lasts longer, you'll have to pay more. The best starter pack on those sites are the ibanez IJX121 metal guitar jumpstart package and an Epiphone Epiphone Les Paul Standard and Amp Pack. the ibanez is affordable at $299 but if you want a cheaper one, then it might not last as long. good luck! :)
also try to visit a guitar center or music store around your county.
if you try it firsthand, then you will have a better feel for it. here:

I say Fender. But Gibson is good too...
Maybe you should start off with a cheaper one and go for a Yamaha then work your way up to a Fender. :)

Fender, no doubt. But wherever you buy it from, please tell them that this will be your first guitar, and you'll need it set up for a beginner (Lowered action, lighter strings). A decent shop will not charge you for this service.
In fact, if you go to some of the better shops (Like McCabes in LA, http://www.mccabes.com/) you can rent anything in the store before you buy it.

If price is a concern, CostCo and SamsClub often sell "Jam Packs", Fendor electrics with a small amp, designed for a beginner. Yes, you will eventually outgrow it, but spending < $150 means you can beat it up, learn what you like, and then get a beter guitar, later.

Fender. Maybe a Fender Strat?

fender is really the brand to go with for a first guitar, especially if you don't know if you'll still be playing it a year from now, but if you stick with it , i think esp's are the best high end guitars (but they make affordable ones too)

Depends on which you're more comfortable with. But I'd say Fender, I've been using a Strat for ages. And it's good.

I got an Ibanez and it's never had a problem, but of the two you listed, I guess I'd get the Fender.
