well if it is a 10/100 network you deffenetly want a PCI card, if it is a WI-FI card, usb might be better, because the PCI adapter for wi-fi has the antenna that gets in the way of the wires in the back of the PC. But having a card plugged directly into the PCI local bus gives the card a direct "road" to the CPU which would be a faster more reliable connection. So, what type of network is it? And what type of computer is it? Desktop Vs. Laptop. Personially I use Netgear routers and Linsys cards. Bufflelo makes good products as well as SMC. Do some reasearch, but really it is all the same stuff with different names. Netgear, Linksys, etc.

PCI is the best. Go with Linksys, Netgear, or D-Link. They all perform equally. As far as secure, that's up to your network and computer. For the most security, turn on all of the features in your router. Make sure the Windows Firewall is active. If you go with a seperate firewall, like Zone Alarm, turn off Windows Firewall as they don't work well together.

PCI is best, USB adapters can be flaky at times. PCI is the most secure of the two, and is faster then USB.

Get a PCI one. The most reliable and performant ones are from Intel.
If you are looking for 10/100 MBPS card - you can get them for about $10-20.
