I've been living here on a budget for years, so hopefully I can help!
The zoo is great here, plan on spending at least a half day there.

I'd also recommend the Seattle Aquarium, we're members there and it's also lots of fun for kids. They love to see the fish that look like Nemo! :)

If you go to the Space Needle, there are usually other things to do that are free at Seattle Center. You could check their calendar to see what's going on while you're in town. Also, Seattle Center is home to the Children's Museum and the Pacific Science Center, both of which would be fun for your son.

If your son likes boats, I'd recommend taking a ferry ride. You can walk on, take the trip across (beautiful views of the city!) and come straight back. You only pay a fare for one leg of the trip and it's about a third of the price of one of the Argosy Cruises.

You also mentioned wanting to see the ocean. We're not exactly on the ocean, we're on Puget Sound, an inlet. But there are some nice beaches here. Here's links to my favorites:

If your son likes airplanes, you might also try the Museum of Flight:

Most of these attractions you can buy discount coupons for:

Best of luck to you and your family during these trying times, I hope you can have fun while you are here, despite the circumstances...
Take care!

First of all, I hope that things go well with your son's surgery.
Children's Hospital in Seattle, which is where I am presuming he will have surgery at age 3, is one of the best hospitals in the United States. Beautiful and caring staff, and highly innovative Doctors.
Yes, you must take him to Woodland Park Zoo.
The Aquarium downtown will also cheer him, it is not that expensive. Go to this site for ticket information on all the places in Seattle: http://www.goseattlecard.com/
You don't have to purchase Go Cards but can see individual prices for each attraction by going to that particular attraction.
The poster who warned you about the bums..I hope you ignore.
There is no bum problem that any other city doesn't have, and they will not bother you trust me.
Walking around the downtown area at night now that the decorations are out can pass the time and give him nice things to look at.
Here is another site you might like: http://www.seattlekids.net/
Cheap and fun, because after all it shouldn't cost a fortune.
Good luck and have fun, Seattle is great!!!

Have you contacted your travel agent?
I have a list of attractions in seattle that you could get a discount on as well as your hotel.
Unever under estimate the value of your travel agent.
