As others have mentioned, enable WEP or WPA. Also, turn off SSID broadcast (so strangers won't easily detect your network).
You would configure both these things through your wireless router's administration module (a built-in web site on the router).

enable WPA (better than WEP), turn off SSID broadcasting, ignore ping requests. This should make you virtually invisible to everyone. It's about as secure as you can get on a wireless network.
