Socialism involves a certain amount of distribution of wealth by the state, to make sure that every individual is taken care of.
Socialism generally works to see that the labourer gets a fair shake, defending his rights before the capitalists.
Absolute socialism, or totalitarian socialism, becomes what we know as commnism, where the government takes over everything, no privately owned business (or anything else, for that matter). The problem with this form of socialism, is that you can't afford to let people vote freely to choose their government, it ends up being an elite that controls everything, and they become the new capitalists they were trying to combat in the first place.
However when we say "socialism", we are generally not talking a bout this totalitarian form, but the kind I described inthe first statement.

It is the concept that the 'masses' should be ruled by a government that controls all aspects of their lives to ensure nobody gets an 'unfair' advantage of accumulated wealth - except for those who rule.
Socialist leaders habitually eliminate religion from the populations they rule because the Socialist leader seeks absolute control over the minds as well as assets of the population.
George Orwell was a former Socialist/Communist whose novel "1984" exposed the inner workings of the Socialist system of 'mental domination' of the masses.
