yeah that'll do. Stay away from the 600+ class for a year or two untill you learn how to ride. Just remember people in cars dont see bikes alot of times. For the first year i highly recommend riding with your headlight ON it might just save your life. But then again i've almost been hit many times with my lights on and my bike isn't exactly quiet. Always assume that people in cars like to run over people on bikes. Never forget that and you'll be ok.

I'm a woman (5'6", 125) and I got my motorcycle endorsement 2 months ago. I bought the Kawasaki Ninja 650R days after getting my endorsement. Let me tell you, it's AWESOME! I don't feel that it has too much power, nor is it too slow. It is a great beginner bike and is very forgiving to mistakes. It's light and it's quick. It's a very capable bike. I've heard people suggest starting with the 250R and then upgrade later, but that is really a personal choice. I truly believe that once you master the 250 - which should be in a few months - you will be ready for something more powerful. I think the 650R is a good start.

Nice size bike I started off on a 450. A 125 or 250 is too small. in highway situations you need the extra speed to stay safe. Nothing worse than being on a 4 lane when all other traffic is doing 70 passing you while you are going 55 on a motorcycle. Suicide man. Tell the kid a brain bucket is mandatory, and to always be on the lookout for cars that don't see him.
Lately I have found that duel purpose bikes are much more fun. i have a blast on my DR350 (not a highway bike)

You paid a little much for it, but you'll learn valuable lessons on what sounds like a good bike. Have fun, my first bike was a KZ550 Kawasaki...you're headed for fun times.
Just be careful out there....

500 will be fine. It should be reasonably safe and fast enough that you won't outgrow it in 6 months. Ideally, you will ride for a month, get overly comfortable, scare the crap out of yourself without getting hurt, realize that this is a pretty sweet bike, ride it for a year or two and love it, take some MSF classes, realize that you can handle more power, and get a newer 600-900 in late '08.

That'll be a decent bike. Just know, that it's going to get laid down at some point in time, if this is his first bike ever. So make sure you don't invest too much in the bike. But yeah, it'll be fun for him/her.

Not bad for a baby bullet bike. Fun, light, and not overly slow. Remember, doesn't matter what your riding, Getting hit by cars hurts a lot, and hitting stuff hurts too. Have fun riding.

Until you have taken lessons from qualified instructors no bike is a good starter bike.
