I just bought a toshiba dvd recorder and can't get the menu to be visable on my tv

Hooking up a dvd recorder is the same as hooking up the vcr, not much difference. Make sure you use the right cables and hook up to the right input. To view the menu you must select the recorder input on the tv screen with the tv remote. The input is usually marked video in 1 or 2, component in 1 or 2,.......
