Former presidents only get secret service protection for 10 years. Saddam's attempted assassination on Bush 41 after he left office shows that it is needed. Even if Bush 43 was impeached and removed from office, I think he would still get the protection.
In general I don't think it's asking a lot that we protect our former leaders, regardless of how we feel about their tenure. There are never more than 4 or 5 alive at any one time, including the sitting president, and as I indicated it's for a limited period of time.
For the record, I'm not a fan of Dubya.

You bet. You are forgetting that Bush, and other "Old Geezer" presidents were elected by the majority of Americans. To serve as president is a huge sacrifice, and a huge job, and takes a toll on one's time, privacy, family life, and health. The least we can do is provide a pension and security.

And as for President Bush, I would give any of my tax dollars for whatever he needed in the future. I think that time and history will show him as one of our greatest presidents.

Former Presidents and their spouses beginning with W. Bush will not receive lifetime Secret Service protection.

"In 1965, Congress authorized the Secret Service (Public Law 89-186) to protect a former president and his/her spouse during their lifetime, unless they decline protection. Congress recently enacted legislation that limits Secret Service protection for former presidents to ten years after leaving office. Under this new law, individuals who are in office before January 1, 1997, will continue to receive Secret Service protection for their lifetime. Individuals elected to office after that time will receive protection for ten years after leaving office. Therefore, former president Clinton will be the last president to receive lifetime protection."
