It's normal for it to take a while for your period to become regular (if it ever does!). If you can get a tampon in partway, then a hymen shouldn't be the issue.
The start of your period is a good time to have your first gynecological appointment. Talk to your mom about making an appointment for you. Then you can ask the doctor all your questions. And check this out:

I'm assuming you're not sexually active since you're just now starting your period and your hymen is still there - so I'm assuming you haven't missed a period because you are pregnant. If there's a chance you might be pregnant, please see a doctor. When my periods started, I had them very irregularly for about a year before I could predict when they were going to happen. I don't know about the hymen blocking tampons, but I never had a problem with that while I was a virgin. Make sure you are using small tampons with maybe a plastic applicator- they go in easier - and that you are putting them in by pushing them down and back (like toward your butthole), not straight up.

When periods start it is not unusual for them to be very irregular.
Are you sure you are trying to insert the tampon in the right place? The urethra is very close to the opening for the vagina. Try looking with a mirror. You might also want to try inserting your finger. Are you getting any discharge on your underwear. I don't mean bloody just the normal light yellowish discharge.
Really it is very unlikely that they hymen is blocking the flow. If you are getting nay of the normal yellowish discharge on your underwear you are not blocked.
Really this i most likely natural caused by your hormones not being balanced yet BUT there are numerous conditions that can cause you hormones to be out of balance. You might want to see a doctor. If nothing else it will make you fell better.

your period can be irregular for more than a year, and that is normal, even into your 20s.
as for the tampons, you may consider a different kind. OB are shorter than some of the other brands, if length is what the problem is. and you can absolutely use tampons and have them fit before you become sexually active. it's up to you.
raredawn: there is no way to mistake a urethra for vaginal opening, it is TINY (unless there is some egregious damage to it), and no part of a tampon could ever come close to fitting in it without a ridiculous amount of force and i can't even contemplate the pain that would be involved!

Your hymen should not block everything as it is normally not that solid and should allow blood and lining to flow out. Since you have one period I would assume that it isn't blocking anything. However, if you are concerned I would suggest asking your doctor or even calling up a gynecologist and seeing what they suggest. You may try talking to your mother, aunt, grandmother or similar female in your family and see if it is something genetic.
As for fitting in tampons, it takes awhile to adjust your body to them and I would not recommend using them for the first year after your first period.

Hey, not to worry, young girls often have irregular periods when they're 1st getting started. As you get older no doubt they'll get more regular. As for the tampons, I think you should just try pads, since the tampons may feel uncomfortable. My mom was right about that, cause as I got older I was better able to use tampons, and so will you. Best wishes :)

Don't worry yourself too much about it. I couldn't use tampons for the first couple of years. But still if you can, tell your mum or a friend as it might be a good idea to go and have your doc check you out just to make sure. Pick a nice lady doc, makes it easier and she'll explain it all to you.

It's normal not to get a second period right away. Sometimes it takes several months before they come on a regular basis. Hon, tampons are NOT meant for virgins. This may be why you are having trouble inserting them. Try pads for now, you don't want to break your hymen now do you?

I dont think virginity affects menstrual flow, but hormone fluctuations do. Go see a doctor and get a pap done, just to be sure everything is running normally. I wouldnt worry too much about it, once it starts you will wish it was gone again! Besides, worry will delay your period too. ALso, I dont think tampons are safe, have you heard about toxic shock syndrome!

That's normal. About your hymen.....probably. Try putting a finger in and move it from side to side. That will help to stretch the hymen out. You could also be trying a tampon that is too big....try a smaller size.
