Many many years ago, Sears & Roebuck shipped "new home kits" all over the country. You could order the house right out of the Sears catalog and have it shipped to your lot. The idea was to then hire local carpenters to actually build and finish the house. This was done long before Sears came up with the "Craftsman" brand of tools and has no relationship with what are known as "craftsman style homes".
Craftsman style homes are usually bungalow type homes. They tend to show off the joinery and woodworking skills of the carpenters (craftsmen) who built them. A lot of exposed wood, exposed joinery, and built in cabinetry are typical. There is a lot of information available on the internet. A Yahoo search for "craftsman style homes" (include the quotation marks in the Yahoo search box) yields 21,400 results. If you do the same search, and are willing to spend a little time exploring, I'm sure that you will quickly find lots of useful and interesting information including pictures and floorplans.
Good luck with your search for information.

While there is some substance to the Sears story, the Craftsman style is credited to Gustav Stickley, who edited a magazine called "The Craftsman" in the early 1900s. Craftsman style was an outgrowth of the Arts & Crafts style that originated with William Morris in England, and was a response to what he saw as the overly elaborate decor of Victorian England. In America the style expressed itself in Stickley's work, as well as Greene & Greene, the Roycrofters, and the early work of Frank Lloyd Wright, whose style was known as Prairie.

Below is a quote from a web site, the link is copied below. Frank Lloyd Wright was part of the "Craftsman House" movement. If you have ever been in a Wright house you know it's something special. Wright hated the "Victorian House" which really was the dominant style at the turn of the Century. Personally, I like both styles.
"Craftsman house plans focus on fine design points and an extensive use of wood which make them sought after by those who prefer quality details in their home.
Craftsman style homes, close cousins to bungalows and popularized in the early 20th Century, remain one of the most sought-after house plans for those who desire quality detail in a home. While often smaller than other contemporary designs, Craftsman style homes make up in livability what they lack in square footage."

U.S. Answer: There is no database of compiled information, unless your house is on a historic registry and someone else has already bothered to compile the information. The land records will be at your county courthouse. These will be dry facts about the property, and could contain information about owners, permits, liens filed, etc. They will pertain to owners, not renters. This likely won't get you the type of history you're looking for, but a good researcher could then follow the trail regarding the owners. It will tell you the year it was built. Newspapers will run stories with names and neighborhoods. Very rarely do they list addresses, and addresses can change over time. In older neighborhoods historical societies and libraries may have some information. Again, most of the time the information is not searchable by address, so it takes a fairly dedicated researcher to find it.

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/WoodworkingProjects
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.

Actually, your friend is close.
Sears actually used to build houses. They would hire sub contrators to build from plans Sears had. Some Craftman style houses are very nice.
