I am using windows xp. everything stops; mouse won't move etc, however, if I am watching a show, after the 10 secs, it speeds up (sound included) until it has "caught up" After the "hang" it goes back to normal until it does it again. it is very annoying. I have the latest version of Norton Internet Security, so I don't think I have any kind of virus.

You should have an anti-spyware solution on your computer. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

Its probably your antivirus itself scanning temp files created. I hate norton because of this and other CPU robbing "features". Unfortunately, you need to turn down the sensitivity for this to be corrected. If you can somehow find the specific file being created, you can tell norton to allow an exception there. I had the same thing with itunes.

A way to be totally sure is to run process explorer. You sound like you know your way around a computer, so I'm not afraid to recommend to you.

Search the microsoft site for it. Check in the windows downloads section.

Welcome to the world of windows diagnostics!

Run adaware, spybot, norton and spysweeper. your hd may need replacing and/or it has too much stuff on it.

just cause you got norton doesnt mean you wont get other sorts of malware. in fact my spysweeper got stuff that norotn never looks for. I got the one with all the spy stuff too for the norton program.

you may also want to defrag your hd and clean up temp files with a clean sweep program.

Odd that it happens every half hour. Do you have any scheduled events on your computer?
