i dont want to pay for them, because I dont know how to use it very well. I just want to know how to fiddle with the program without getting frustrated. I'd like the downloads to be in 7.0 so I can follow along.

go on google and search for maya tut, maya tutorial, maya learning, maya lessons, maya tricks, maya technique.
all of those separately, pretty much, anything maya *teaching word related* and you will find plenty on the net.
I am a photoshop guru now by doing the same thing with photoshop
Good luck, patience, work, google, trial and error will teach you well. just dont get discouraged, and keep on experimenting with it.

i dont think you can download free maya software:
but there are software are quite the same with maya that you can download... try to download Gmax,

Hey...you might need to try at www.torrentspy.com and search for what you need.
You will also need Torrent Download software to get all those result.
